Perry's Restaurant
2911 Routh St
Dallas, TX 75201
214-871-9991

Description: Known primarily as a "comfort food" destination, this mid-priced Cedar Springs steakhouse offers a surprisingly sophisticated menu and an intimate dining atmosphere. Amidst the dark wood walls and candlelit tables, you'll find a busy wait staff eager to please and an endless stream of customers. The dishes are basic, but created with great care. Favorites include the chicken-fried rib eye, the steak Oscar (a generous 12-ounce filet served with crabmeat) and lamb chops. Perry's also has a nice selection of seafood dishes including lobster, sea scallops (cooked in lemon butter and served with risotto) and a hearty tuna tartar appetizer.

Abacus
4511 McKinney Ave.
Dallas, TX 75205
214-559-3111

Description: Revered as much by the artist as it is by the gourmet, Abacus has long reigned as Dallas' foremost darling of the dining press. Both decor and dinner benefit from a flawless presentation, with most entrees qualifying as works of art, albeit of a more post-modern variety. Like the interior design scheme, Abacus' menu features more than a sprinkling of Asian influence; among the offerings are a number of sushi items, as well as several Eastern variations of Western dishes.

Nana
2201 N. Stemmons Freeway
Dallas, TX 75207
214-761-7479

Description: like the painting from which the name is taken, Nana symbolizes beauty and luxury. Perched on the 27th floor of the Wyndham Anatole Hotel, Nana offers a crystalline nocturnal view of the celestial bodies and the sparkling Dallas skyline. The wall-size portrait by Russian-Polish artist Suchorowsky, visible in the bar, details a voluptuous nude draped in rich textiles and fine China. Nana, the restaurant, promises dining in the same lavish manner.

Oceanaire Seafood Room
13340 Dallas Pkwy
Dallas, TX 75240
972-759-2277

Description: If you're looking for a romantic restaurant for that special dinner or celebration, look no further than Oceanaire Seafood Room. Located in the Westin Galleria, the interior of this charming restaurant calls to mind the 1930s and 1940s with dim lighting, red leather seats, wood accents and soft jazz music playing in the background. While the decor may be retro, the menu is not. Oceanaire offers more than 30 varieties of in-season fresh seafood, all flown in daily, from Halibut T-Bone Steak and Arctic Char to Copper River Salmon and Bluefin Tuna.

York Street
6047 Lewis
Dallas, TX 75206
214-826-0968

Description: If you've been to York Street before, you may want to give it another shot. Both the menu and the atmosphere of this tiny eatery are constantly changing. Actually, chances are, you've never been to York Street. The restaurant is so small and out of the way that most of the patrons are regulars who have been coming for years. But they do keep coming back, and they keep the few tables packed almost every evening.

Ciudad Restaurant
3888 Oak Lawn Ave
Dallas, TX 75219
214-219-3141

Description: With tall, weather-beaten doors, the entrance to Ciudad looks like the entryway to an old and established restaurant in Mexico City. To the immediate left, adjacent to the hostess' desk, a large cabinet displays a collection of fine wines -- the first indicator this is not a typical Mexican restaurant. The dining tables are laid out with starched white tablecloths and all the forks, knives and spoons, reminiscent of a French restaurant. Missing from the table, however, are the customary gratis bowls of chips and salsa, which are available by request only.

La Duni Latin Café
4620 McKinney Ave
Dallas, TX 75205
214-520-7300

Description: Critic and connoisseur alike have been quite unreserved in their praise for La Duni and its otherworldly fusion of European and Latin cuisine. There's plenty of cause for such unanimous acclaim, even aside from La Duni's status as the only four-star restaurant in town where one may obtain an entree for less than $10, quite a bargain in light of the fact that even such mundane things as sandwiches get more attention than Pamela Anderson at a Star Trek convention.

Arcodoro & Pomodoro Ristoranti Italiani
2708 Routh St
Dallas, TX 75201
214-871-1924

Description: Arcodoro is a sleek Euro-style bar and cafe that literally hums with activity. It recently moved into a larger, more upscale space on Routh Street next to its more formal sibling Pomodoro (both are in the villa-style building that once housed the restaurant Baby Routh). Many people come for an aperitif, for a glass of wine -- their list includes a fine selection of Italian wines -- or for specials like the Grapparita, their tasty grappa-infused margarita.

Local
2936 Elm St
Dallas, TX 75226
214-752-7500

Description: The real-estate that now serves as the setting for Local began its life nearly 100 years ago as one of Dallas' first modern hotels, later acting as a major haunt for a motley crew of jazz musicians and assorted hipsters, and eventually serving as caterer Tracy Miller's food service headquarters. Today, 2936 Elm St. has undergone another transformation, this time into Ms. Miller's first sit-down restaurant.

Aurora
4216 Oak Lawn Ave
Dallas, TX 75219
214-528-9400

Description: If today's urban dining scene has become something of a competition to see who can provide the highest degree of all-out intricacy, then the endlessly fashionable Oak Lawn hot spot known as Aurora is a top contender. Most every entree name is sprinkled with no fewer than four prepositions or conjunctions; at a grand total of 17 words, ''Wild Bodega Bay Salmon Tornado on Red French Radish with Braised Sorrel Lettuce and Saffron Vanilla Sauce'' is fairly representative of the level of nuance you'll encounter with every course. Aurora's impressive interior is equally enticing.
